What’s your vision for your life? Do you have one?
Do you have an image of what you want your life to be in 2 years? How about 10 years? Do you know what you want to be doing, what your health will be, and who you want to be in 5 years or 20 years?
Most of us don’t think of it.
But not having a vision for your life is like…well, like driving a car…Picture this, it’s a stormy night, the rain is pouring down, you are trying your best to stay on the road but you have no map and you’re not sure of your final destination…your wipers and headlights are not working properly so you can’t see well…and suddenly you realize you don’t even have a road in front of you! Sometimes life can feel just like that.
You might make a New Year’s resolution, make a wish as you blow out your birthday candles, read your daily horoscope, go for a tarot card reading and hope for the best.
But that’s all it’s going to be – wishful thinking, if you don’t focus on your goals and create a visual road map to achieving them.
There is a powerful purpose to visioning and we’ll discuss:
- why creating a vision is important,
- what your personal vision can be, and
- how to get started.
Why creating a vision is important
Visioning is used as a tool to hold in focus and in your awareness –
- those things that are important to you,
- those things you want to be,
- that you want to accomplish, and
- what you want to create for yourself and your life.
It is easy to lose sight of them or be afraid to take action and do what it takes to realize them.
Visioning is a process that stirs our energy and imagination. It stimulates the right-side of our brain where intuition and creativity reside and allows our left-brain logic, rational, analytic thought processes to rest. Instead we are invited to imagine what we want and what we dream of doing and creating and being. As Jack Canfield puts it, “It picks us up out of today and places us into some place in our future selves.”
Tapping into the powers of the brain with visioning has your brain function as if your goals are already attained. Your brain will work tirelessly to achieve the statements you give your subconscious mind. And when those statements are the affirmation of your goals, you will work consciously and subconsciously towards them.
Various visioning tools and options
There are various tools you can use to vision your life:
You can write your vision story or script or create a vision board of collaged images and words.
If you enjoy writing, you might prefer to use your imagination and creativity to write the story of yourself some number of years from today with only your boldness and outrageousness to limit you.
If you prefer images, colours and text, you might choose to create a personal vision board. Using pictures from magazines look for images that represent or symbolize the experiences, people and values you want to attract into your life and then place them on a board of your choosing (in terms of size, colour, weight).
What your personal vision can be
You can use your vision board or vision script to depict goals and dreams in all areas of your life, or in just one specific area such as –
- your home,
- your career and life purpose,
- your health (physical, mental, emotional, sexual, social, etc)
- your retirement,
- your relationship,
- your family,
- or the dreams that you want to fulfill.
The clearer your vision is, the easier it will be for you to prepare for it, work towards it and identify who and what you need to get there.
As Life Management Expert Vaishali says: “The things to which you give your attention are where you are sending your power”
