Have you had a wonderful summer? Did you have fun? Are you relaxed? Hope so! Can’t believe it’s September already. Goodness knows this blogger has been in slow down mode this summer as evidenced by the paucity of blog posts!
It’s that time of year when we start to transition from the expansive, creative heat of summer into the contracting, insular depth of autumn and winter. The leaves are starting to change colours, the nights are cooler and the sun is setting earlier.
With September comes Labour Day and the “Back to School” tradition that reminds us that the end of summer has arrived. We each have our personal attitudes, beliefs and experiences about September and autumn – for some it’s a new start, for others it’s a sign that dreary winter is on its way, or that the time for fun is over and we need to hunker down to work again.
Consider what it is about summertime that you’ll miss. It might be
- the heat & warmth,
- the sensuality and pleasure,
- the relaxation and peacefulness,
- the fun and adventure,
- the frequency that you connected with your partner/children/friends/family,
- being outdoors and more active, or
- something else?
How can you bring that into your life this autumn & winter? What will you do to create that for yourself?
Can you hear your gremlin voices start to talk to you? We coaches are on the lookout for those gremlins – they like to sabotage our efforts at changing the status quo. You’ll know when your gremlin shows up – it whines and complains about it all.
“Oh, what now? What do I have to do now? I just want to keep enjoying summer and lazing around, eating ice cream and reading my chick lit/sci-fi books! Leave me alone. I don’t want to work.”
Do you recognize that voice? It loves it when things remain the same and the feeling of comfort and safety. It doesn’t like to be challenged or have you thinking about changing yourself or taking risks so that you’re more confident, courageous and powerful. Nope, gremlin doesn’t like that.
So let’s take the piss out of that gremlin. It helps to get curious and notice it, take responsibility, take charge and love yourself through this transition.
As of today (September 3rd) there are 3 months and 28 days to achieve our dreams & goals. It’s a great time to renew the commitment to your 2010 goals, January 1st/New Year’s resolution or those dreams on your bucket list.
“Back to School” presents us with a wonderful opportunity to get back to work on our goals whether they are for career, health, relationships or fun. Review your personal and professional goals and dreams, revise them or create some juicy new ones.
Make this transition from summer to autumn a positive, healthy and abundant one for yourself.
And I leave(s!) you with two autumnal quotes – one somber, the other definitely not!
Change is a measure of time and, in the autumn, time seems speeded up. What was is not and never again will be; what is is change.

Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles, watching the birds change color and fall from the trees.
